Comfort Food. What’s yours?

Comfort Food

Last week, a friend asked me about my favorite comfort food, and I wasn’t sure at first. As someone who loves trying new flavors, it’s hard to choose just one. But the next day, I sat down with a warm bowl of Dal Chawal, and suddenly everything made sense.

The rich dal, poured over soft, fluffy rice, with a side of tangy mango pickle—it’s like a cozy hug in every bite. For me, Dal Chawal is more than just food; it’s a taste of home, filling my heart with warmth and joy.

What makes this dish even better is how simple it is to make. No matter how skilled you are in the kitchen, Dal Chawal always feels like coming home after a long, tiring day. In a world full of fancy meals, this is the one dish that brings me back to pure, wholesome comfort.

Now more than ever, I appreciate these simple meals. With all the sugary treats and junk food around, Dal Chawal is like a comforting bowl of goodness, nourishing both body and soul.

Here’s my recipe for a perfect bowl of Dal Chawal:

Ingredients:

1 Cup Masoor Dal – Soaked for 15-20 minutes

2 Garlic Cloves peeled

4 Green Chillies – Chopped

1 Medium onion, – Finely chopped

1 Small tomato, – Finely chopped

1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder

1/4 tsp Curry Powder

Salt to taste

For Seasoning:

– 2 tbsp Ghee

– 1/2 tsp Cumin (Jeera)

– A pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)

Method:

  1. Wash and soak the dal for 10 minutes.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add dal, garlic, half the chilies, turmeric, and 3 cups of water. Cook for one whistle.
  3. While it rests, chop the onion and tomato.
  4. Heat ghee in a pan; add cumin and hing until fragrant.
  5. Sauté the onions and the rest of the chilies until soft. Add tomatoes, salt, and turmeric, and cook until well mixed.
  6. Stir this into the dal and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  7. Serve hot with rice, and top with a little ghee.

For Sides:

Mango Achar

Yoghurt with a sprinkle of chat masala

Vinegar-soaked onions

Dal Chawal is more than just a meal—it’s a comforting escape, a reminder of simpler times, and a taste of home in every bite. Whether you’re looking for something nourishing after a busy day or craving a dish that warms both your heart and soul, this humble bowl of dal and rice never disappoints.

Bon Appetite!
