Ramadan 2024: Fasting, Compassion, Connections

Ramadan: Looking back on the past week fills me with a feeling of achievement. Finishing a week of fasting is always a big deal, but this one has been particularly special. It’s not just about not eating or drinking; it’s been a journey of learning about myself, especially through volunteering and helping others.

Volunteering has always been close to my heart, but this Ramadan, I felt a stirring within me to do more and give back in a deeply meaningful way. And so, I found myself joining the Ramadan camping initiative led by the Emirates Red Crescent, a decision that would shape the course of my Ramadan experience in profound ways.

Ramadan 2024: The Emirates Red Crescent Group, Umm Al Quwain

As part of the team tasked with distributing snack boxes just before sunset, I was assigned to a gas station in my community. Ms. Maysoon Younees led our team of four volunteers with compassion. Our daily mission was to offer simple snacks to those still on the road and looking to break their fast on time.In our seemingly simple task, we found immense significance. Each snack box contained not just food and essentials, but also a message of unity and care. Handing them out, I was moved by the power of such a small gesture to brighten someone’s day and provide a moment of comfort amid life’s rush.

Volunteers in Compassionate Giving: Ms Maysoon Younees, Hamdan Sheikh and Ms. Prabitha Pavitharan

Ms. Maysoon Younees, a senior corporate professional with over 22 years of experience at the Red Crescent, highlights the deep happiness in helping people. She values the genuine human bonds formed through acts of kindness and assistance. Her emphasis on the profound joy of assisting strangers and the meaningful human connections forged through acts of kindness resonates deeply with us. Under her guidance, we find inspiration and fulfillment in serving others selflessly, making a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Hamdan Sheikh, a Grade 10 student from The Wise Indian School of UAQ, beams excitedly as he voluntarily participates in the campaign. “Helping others feels exhilarating. It instills a sense of responsibility and belonging to the community. Thank you, Emirates Red Crescent,” he expresses gratefully.

Prabitha Pavitharan, a corporate employee, joyfully serves the community during the holy month of Ramadan. She shares, “The blessings of Ramadan are truly unique. It brings peace, and an amazing feeling comes with helping others.”

Fasting isn’t just about giving up food and drink. It turned into a journey of discovering myself and being more mindful. I found fulfillment in the smiles, gratitude, and connections with others. Giving became receiving—a deeper understanding of people’s needs, more empathy, and a greater appreciation for my blessings. Every day has its challenges and chances to grow. From braving traffic to delivering snacks to navigating emotions, each moment taught me resilience, patience, and the power of compassion and connection to people.

As the week closed, I reflected on the lessons and connections made. Ramadan’s spirit—generosity, compassion, and selflessness—will guide me forward. Looking forward to the next week of fasting and volunteering fills me with gratitude for the chance to help, learn, and grow.
